Travel Information

Travel Information from the Mohonk Mountain House website:

Updated: 10/31/17

Please note: the Mohonk Mountain House (MMH) is located on private property and advanced reservations are required to gain access to the resort property. If you are not pre-registered as an overnight guest or day attendee for the GLEON 19 meeting, you will not be able to access the property.

Mohonk is located west of New Paltz, six miles from the NYS Thruway. For information about costs, see Budget Your Travel. Attendees are advised to reserve all ground transportation well in advance of the meeting.

By Air

Mohonk Mountain House is 25 miles from Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, 70 miles from Albany Airport, and less than 100 miles from New York City area airports.

There are no plans to organize shuttle service from New York City area airports. GLEON 19 meeting attendees arriving by air should plan to make their own way to either the New Paltz, NY bus station (recommended, see below) or the Poughkeepsie, NY train station (requires special arrangements for pick-up, see below).

For attendees arriving at Stewart airport, please contact meeting organizers for help with arranging ground transportation.

By Bus

Bus service is available on Adirondack Trailways to the New Paltz Bus Station. (Please be sure to get off the bus at the New Paltz Bus Station in the middle of town, not at the Park and Ride by the Thruway.) Service departs from Port Authority in New York City, Albany Trailways terminal (360 Broadway), Route 17 in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and locations in southern New York and Long Island. All New York City area airports have shuttles that will take you directly to Port Authority terminals via Airporter shuttles (transportation from the airport to Port Authority can be reserved in advance). Trailways can be reached at 800.858.8555 and online at and tickets can be purchased in advance. If reserving your ticket online, chose "New York, NY" as your departure city and "New Paltz, NY as your final destination.

Correction (11/14/17): a previous version of the instructions indicated the New Paltz (SUNY) bus station as an option. Although the main New Paltz bus station is preferred, it is fine if you have already purchased a ticket to this station. Please follow the instructions below to arrange for a pick-up at this station.

Of the public transportation options, bus service is the preferred option and will bring you the closest to the MMH meeting venue. It is the only option that includes the MMH complimentary pick-up and drop-off for overnight guests at MMH. For those arriving at the New Paltz, NY bus station, contact Mohonk Guest Services Department at +1 (845) 256-2016 to arrange pick-up and drop-off (no cost for overnight guests). If you are not able to call or booked your bus ticket to the New Paltz (SUNY) station, please contact Cassandra Harrison at the Cary Institute to help you make arrangements for a pick-up.

By Train

Train service is available via Metro North and Amtrak trains to the Poughkeepsie Train Station (POU). Metro North leaves from Grand Central in New York City; Amtrak leaves from Penn Station in New York City. Information is available at for Metro North, and for Amtrak trains.

If at all possible, attendees should take the bus (not the train) to reach the Mohonk Mountain House. However, if staying at the Cary Institute before or after the GLEON 19, the POU station is recommended. Meeting organizers can arrange pick-up and drop-off or advise on other transportation options from the POU train station to either Cary or Mohonk. After the field trip on Friday, 1 December, a bus will provide a drop-off at the POU train station, an option for those departing by train after 4:30 pm.
