Description:

The collection of high frequency limnological data from remote sensors has allowed new opportunities for understanding lake dynamics. Over the past five to ten years advances in underwater sensor technology have allowed limnologists to collect these data at unprecedented temporal frequencies. It has also raised a number of interesting information technology challenges.  This special session will focus on applications of these high-frequency data collected from remotely-deployed sensors in limnological research. In particular we will focus on the scientific inferences made from these data, the experiences of various research communities in using these sensors, and steps towards solving the information technology challenges networks of such sensors pose. In addition to the general limnological community, we will draw on the experiences of the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (community.gleon.org), an open, grassroots network of limnologists and information technology specialists. GLEON was formed in March 2005 and consists of research teams in more than ten countries. We will welcome 10-15 speakers from GLEON and the wider limnological community who have expertise in collecting underwater sensor data, to communicate their insights into lake dynamics, deployment experiences and IT challenges. We expect an audience of perhaps 50-100 for this session.
