- Dr. David da Motta Marques, Professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and GLEON member, talked about GLEON with local mayor, Mr. Daiçon da Silva. The article (Litoral Norte RS(PDF), 28 October 2008) notes that GLEON is an international group of scientists that studies lakes on a global scale, which is important for understanding key processes such as climate change. At the same meeting, Dr. Motta Marques mentioned that this group is planning a conference in May 2010 at Torres, north of Rio Grande do Sul State. A special meeting between these scientists and the mayors of the counties associated with the Rio Grande do Sul State littoral area was also proposed.
