SUMMARY:Limnoseries Lecture May 2026
DESCRIPTION:The next Limnoseries lecture will take place on May 18th at 13:00 UTC (45min duration) \nOperating in a perfect storm: ecological lake restoration and conservation in the anthropocene\nPresented by Lisette de Senerpont Domis\nLisette will be talking about the multiple challenges lake managers face in the light of rapid environmental changes. Her research highlights that this “storm”; is created by the intersection of climate change\, pollution\, and biodiversity loss\, resulting in: \n– Compounding Threats: The combination of eutrophication (nutrient pollution)\, altered hydrology due to climate change\, and micropollutants (e.g.\, pharmaceuticals\, plastics) is creating unforeseen ecological disasters. \n– A “New” Environmental Crisis: Inland waters are under severe pressure\, leading to issues like cyanobacterial blooms (blue-green algae)\, degraded food webs\, and the introduction of invasive species. \n– Reduced Resilience: Local factors (like nutrient loading) combined with global changes (like warming) make systems less resilient and harder to restore. \n– The “Restaurant” Stays Open Longer: Due to climate change\, growing seasons are longer\, meaning harmful algal blooms persist well into the autumn. \n– Need for Holistic Management: She advocates for an “ecocentric” and holistic catchment-scale approach to water management to manage these interacting factors. \nPlease sign up for this lecture by May 15th.
