SUMMARY:GLEON 2025 Virtual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The GLEON 2025 Virtual All Hands’ Meeting\, 27-31 October 2025 will be held in GLEON’s online Gather meeting space following the usual weekly schedule and format for online All Hands’ Meetings\, with working groups at its core (see Program Overview below). \nThe ‘local’ hosts for the virtual meeting are Ludmila Brighenti\, Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais (UEMG)\, and Jose Fernandes\, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). This is a unique opportunity to highlight the research at UEMG and UFMG in Brazil and beyond during the GLEON 2025 Virtual Meeting and to expand GLEON presence in South America. \nThe hashtag #GLEON2025v will be used for social media. \nProgram Overview\nThe GLEON 2025v Program Overview provides a daily schedule of activities and locations. Here is a tentative list of topics and presenters: \n\nSpatiotemporal Analyses of Water Quality in River Basins Using Generalized Additive Models (GAM) – Diego Guimarães Florencio Pujoni\, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais\nIn this workshop\, participants will learn how GAMs can be used to capture complex\, nonlinear relationships in environmental data. We will discuss how spatiotemporal series can be decomposed into spatial and temporal components at multiple scales\, and how variation partitioning can be applied to quantify the relative contributions of these components. As a case study\, the workshop will focus on the Doce and Paraopeba rivers\, both impacted by mine tailings from dam failures. Topics will include model specification\, smoothing techniques\, distributional assumptions\, and diagnostic tools\, emphasizing how GAMs provide a flexible framework for environmental monitoring and hypothesis testing. Hands-on applications in R will demonstrate how these models can be used to extract long-term trends\, seasonality\, and spatial patterns in water quality variables.\nCarbon Footprint of Tropical Reservoirs and climate change – Nathan Barros\, Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora\nIn this workshop\, we will explore how tropical reservoirs interact with environmental and climatic changes. We will review recent scientific advances in understanding these systems\, including the concept of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and the processes that remain overlooked in the context of emissions from tropical reservoirs. The workshop will emphasize the pathways of greenhouse gas emissions from reservoirs and compare them with those observed in natural lakes. In addition\, we will discuss the carbon footprint of tropical reservoirs and its broader implications for climate change. Finally\, we will outline future research directions and management guidelines to mitigate emissions and enhance sustainability.\nSmart Enough? Academia and the Imposter Phenomena – Harriet Wilson\, University of Stirling\nDo you feel like a fraud\, even while pursuing the research path you’ve worked so hard to reach? Does it feel awkward when people assume you must be “smart” just because you’re doing a PhD or describe you as an ‘expert’ in your topic? What is imposter syndrome—or is it even a syndrome at all? Should I ditch it\, outsmart it\, love it\, or embrace it? Surprise\, surprise: I don’t promise any answers. But in this session I’ll attempt to unpack this buzzword topic\, distilling what I’ve learnt from a frankly ridiculous number of self-help books\, to figure out what imposter “syndrome” really is\, why so many academics are struggling with it\, and what\, if anything\, we can do about it.\n\nThere is no fee for the workshops\, but those interested in participating should complete a meeting registration form. DESCRIPTION:The GLEON 2024 Virtual All Hands’ Meeting\, 8-12 April 2024 was held in GLEON’s GatherTown online meeting space following a similar program and weekly schedule for online meeting activities as before. \nFor the first time\, the GLEON virtual meeting had a ‘local’ host from an underrepresented region. For the GLEON 2024 Meeting\, the Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) served as local host to help highlight regional research on Lake Tanganyika\, the African Great Lakes\, and other regional lake research topics. \nThe hashtag #GLEON2024 was used for social media. \nWith the success of in-person and virtual meetings in 2021-2023\, the GLEON Steering Committee recognized the value of both meeting formats to facilitate the inclusiveness of online meetings and the kinds of interactions at in-person meetings that are key to the network’s collaborative approach to lake science. They made a commitment to continue organizing All Hands’ Meetings\, alternating between virtual and in-person meetings every nine months or so.

Communicating effectively helps others to learn from our science\, recognize its message\, and integrate that message into our collective scientific understanding. However\, many scientists are under-trained in how to communicate their science effectively. This workshop will present three simple guidelines that can help us get funding\, write well-structured manuscripts\, and design effective posters and oral presentations. The workshop will also include “hands-on” activities using examples of your own writing and examples from published literature. \nIntroduction to real-time lake forecasting: learn\, teach\, and generate forecasts with Macrosystems EDDIE modules and the NEON Forecasting Challenge by Mary Lofton\, Freya Olsson\, and Cayelan Carey – The use of near-term\, iterative forecasting – i.e.\, making forecasts of future ecosystem conditions with uncertainty that are constantly being updated as new data become available – is rapidly increasing within the lake research community. However\, many scientists may not be familiar with forecasting methods\, educational materials\, or know how to develop their own forecasts. This workshop will tackle this gap! First\, we will provide participants with all materials needed to learn and teach the basics of ecological forecasting with four stand-alone\, modular activities that use National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) lake data and are delivered through R Shiny apps. Our educational modules are part of the Macrosystems EDDIE (Environmental Data-Driven Inquiry & Education) program\, and each module comprises three ~1 hr activities which may be completed all at once or individually. We will provide an overview of the modules and helpful tips for teaching them in your classroom. Second\, we will introduce you to the NEON Forecasting Challenge for lakes\, a national-scale effort of generating real-time forecasts for lakes across the U.S. We will provide you with all of the information and materials so that you can start submitting to the Challenge when it opens in Winter 2023. Come join our effort! \nGLEON-NEON Partnership by Kaelin Cawley – This workshop will serve as an introduction to the US National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) and the data it generates and serves to the scientific community. The session will provide a background on the US NEON program\, the types of data that are collected in terrestrial\, stream\, and lake sites\, and tools available to access the data. Workshop participants will get a chance to work with GLEON and NEON scientists to dive into the data\, make discoveries to understand complex limnological phenomena\, and report back to others on what they found. \nHow to build a model in R by Robert Ladwig\, Hilary Dugan\, and Paul Hanson – Want to be a modeler but don’t know where to start? Do you find the word “model” scary? Wish you knew more about how to get started building models in R? If yes to any of the above\, this workshop is for you. If you already have some R basics under your belt\, we aim to add modeling to your R skillset. Learn what models are and how models are built\, calibrated\, and used for simplifying data and prediction. \nA workshop Q&A session is tentatively scheduled during the virtual meeting live sessions. If you have any questions about workshops\, please contact the GSA. \nVirtual Meeting Technologies\nGLEON used a variety of technologies during the G2023 Virtual Meeting\, including GatherTown (for the main meeting platform)\, Slack (for interactive dialogue)\, and Zoom (for plenary sessions accessed via GatherTown or Zoom directly). \nThe GSA communications subcommittee set-up a Technical Support (#technical-support) channel in the GLEON Slack workspace to provide information and help answer questions about virtual meeting technologies. DESCRIPTION:The GLEON 2022 Meeting was held 30 October – 4 November\, 2022 at the Silver Bay YMCA Conference and Family Retreat Center at Lake George\, New York\, USA. \nAttendees arrived at Lake George by Saturday (students and workshop attendees) or Sunday (for the main meeting) and departed the following Friday and Saturday. \nNote: Due to the consequences of the war in Ukraine\, the GLEON Steering Committee decided in March 2022 to postpone the planned GLEON All Hands’ Meeting in Poland from June 2022 to June 2023 and the planned meeting in Indonesia from 2023 to 2025. Virtual All Hands’ Meetings were added to the schedule in 2023 and 2024. GLEON was grateful to the local partners on Lake George and Lake Champlain for hosting our 2022 meeting on short notice.
