SUMMARY:Limnoseries Workshop February 2026
DESCRIPTION:The next GLEON GSA Limnoseries will take place on February 17 at 7:00 UTC / 15:00 CST (half hour duration). \nTemperature and nutrient sensitivity of denitrification: their interconnected and combined effects in a shallow eutrophic lake\nPresented by Muhammad Numan Ali\nNitrogen pollution and GHG emissions\, especially in aquatic environments\, are critical global concerns. My research investigates nitrate reduction pathways\, specifically denitrification. Exploring how cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) and nutrients affect N transformations in freshwater lakes by using stable isotope and metatranscriptomics to uncover their influence on N removal. \nIf you would like to attend this lecture or receive the recording\, please fill in the following registration form (now closed). \nPlease sign up for this lecture by February 13. The Zoom link required for the lecture will be sent to those who have registered. \nWe hope to see you there! \nGLEON Student Association (GSA) workshop sub-committee

SUMMARY:Limnoseries Lecture November 2025
DESCRIPTION:The next GLEON GSA Limnoseries will take place on November 27 at 15:00 CET / 14:00 UTC (1 hour duration). \nDrivers and impacts of long-term change in the birthplace of Limnology\nPresented by Bastiaan Ibelings\nIn the 19th century Alphonse Forel wrote a book with the title Le Léman (Lake Geneva). A book full of observations on this large and deep lake that are still at the basis of what we do today. In his monograph Forel writes something along the lines: I propose to call this study of lakes Limnology\, the Oceanography of Lakes. Limnology was born. In this lecture I will honour the legacy of Forel and discuss long-term change in the lake\, drivers of change over at least the last 60 years. We will cover the impact of eutrophication followed by re-oligotrophication\, resulting in the present-day question of Have we made the lake too clean? Or do blooms of toxic cyanobacteria still pose a risk\, that would call for further reductions in phosphorus? We will discuss how re-oligotrophication interacts with the effects of climate change – mainly a lack of full winter overturn causing hypoxia\, even in an oligotrophic lake. We will not forget to discuss a third major impact on the functioning and services of Lake Geneva\, the massive invasion of the quagga mussel. \nIf you would like to attend this lecture or receive the recording\, please fill in the following registration form (closed). \nPlease sign up for this lecture by November 20. The Zoom link required for the lecture will be sent to those who have registered. \nWe hope to see you there! \nGLEON Student Association (GSA) workshop sub-committee \n

SUMMARY:Limnoseries Workshop - Proposal Writing: Strategies for Successful Grant Writing
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Thomas Shannon \nThis workshop will focus on developing strategies for writing productive and successful scientific research proposals. We will focus on: 1) finding grants and navigating the diverse international granting landscape\, 2) strategies for developing clear\, concise\, and compelling writing; 3) developing a “skeleton” for your grant application\, going over the critical (and sometimes forgotten) components of the document; 4) strategies for integrating persuasive writing and scientific writing; and 5) tips and tricks for getting words on the page. Participants are encouraged to come prepared to write\, and there will be opportunities throughout the workshop to practice writing short segments relevant to your own upcoming proposals or grant applications. \n*Participants are welcome to join and leave according to their availability. \nIf you would like to attend this workshop or receive the recording\, please fill in the following registration form (registration is now closed). \nPlease sign up for this workshop by October 10. The Zoom link required for the workshop will be sent to those who have registered. \nWe hope to see you there!\nGLEON Student Association (GSA) workshop sub-committee

SUMMARY:GSA Limnoseries - Wind-induced sediment resuspension in a shallow coastal lagoon
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Daniel Chilton \nShallow lakes and lagoons typically exist in either an ecologically healthy\, clear water state\, or a degraded turbid water state. Wind-induced sediment resuspension can be important in maintaining a shallow lagoon in a degraded state. This presentation examines how wind-induced sediment resuspension contributes to the degraded state of the Coorong\, South Australia\, a shallow coastal lagoon of high ecological\, social and economic importance.

SUMMARY:Limnoseries 2025: Workshop on Data Quality Control
DESCRIPTION:Data QC: Before Starting Everything Should be in Order\nPresented by Shajar Regev \nAn important part of our work is handling data. Gathering data from various sources\, consolidating\, preparing it for analysis and using it as an input for models. This part of the work is usually tedious. This workshop deals with the tedious work of data quality control (QC). It is a crucial stage since you want to avoid GIGO (garbage in garbage out) situations. And you also want to avoid re-working this tedious part of your research. In this virtual workshop we will go through a few aspects of data quality control with examples using R. Main topics during the workshop are – Invest time in making tools\, Text and categorical data\, Date – time data\, Continues data and Correcting biased data. \nIf you would like to attend this workshop\, or receive the recording\, please fill in the following registration form: https://forms.gle/wyiz6sh8DXSA8HAv7  \nPlease sign up for this workshop by Jan 26th. \nThe zoom link required for the workshop will be sent to those who have registered for the workshop. \nWe hope to see you there!\nGLEON Student Association (GSA) workshop sub-committee
