SUMMARY:GSA Limnoseries - Wind-induced sediment resuspension in a shallow coastal lagoon
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Daniel Chilton \nShallow lakes and lagoons typically exist in either an ecologically healthy\, clear water state\, or a degraded turbid water state. Wind-induced sediment resuspension can be important in maintaining a shallow lagoon in a degraded state. This presentation examines how wind-induced sediment resuspension contributes to the degraded state of the Coorong\, South Australia\, a shallow coastal lagoon of high ecological\, social and economic importance.

SUMMARY:GSA Limnoseries: How to Design Better Experiments
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Mridul Thomas and Ravi Ranjan\nExperimental designs can make or break an experiment. A good experiment has a clear goal and efficiently uses experimental resources to achieve that goal. In this workshop\, we will review what experiments are for\, basic and advanced principles of designing experiments\, and how to use simulations to evaluate designs before actually doing the experiment. We’ll do a moderate amount of coding in R and so experience with this would be helpful but is not required. We intend to have small-group discussions to help participants develop their own experiments\, and encourage participants to think of a specific question they would like to answer with an experiment.

The online videos will be uploaded and available a week before the virtual meeting. Check back for more details. Here is a tentative list of topics and presenters: \n\nSpatiotemporal Analyses of Water Quality in River Basins Using Generalized Additive Models (GAM) – Diego Guimarães Florencio Pujoni\, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais\nIn this workshop\, participants will learn how GAMs can be used to capture complex\, nonlinear relationships in environmental data. We will discuss how spatiotemporal series can be decomposed into spatial and temporal components at multiple scales\, and how variation partitioning can be applied to quantify the relative contributions of these components. As a case study\, the workshop will focus on the Doce and Paraopeba rivers\, both impacted by mine tailings from dam failures. Topics will include model specification\, smoothing techniques\, distributional assumptions\, and diagnostic tools\, emphasizing how GAMs provide a flexible framework for environmental monitoring and hypothesis testing. Hands-on applications in R will demonstrate how these models can be used to extract long-term trends\, seasonality\, and spatial patterns in water quality variables.\nCarbon Footprint of Tropical Reservoirs and climate change – Nathan Barros\, Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora\nIn this workshop\, we will explore how tropical reservoirs interact with environmental and climatic changes. We will review recent scientific advances in understanding these systems\, including the concept of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and the processes that remain overlooked in the context of emissions from tropical reservoirs. The workshop will emphasize the pathways of greenhouse gas emissions from reservoirs and compare them with those observed in natural lakes. In addition\, we will discuss the carbon footprint of tropical reservoirs and its broader implications for climate change. Finally\, we will outline future research directions and management guidelines to mitigate emissions and enhance sustainability.\nSmart Enough? Academia and the Imposter Phenomena – Harriet Wilson\, University of Stirling\nDo you feel like a fraud\, even while pursuing the research path you’ve worked so hard to reach? Does it feel awkward when people assume you must be “smart” just because you’re doing a PhD or describe you as an ‘expert’ in your topic? What is imposter syndrome—or is it even a syndrome at all? Should I ditch it\, outsmart it\, love it\, or embrace it? Surprise\, surprise: I don’t promise any answers. But in this session I’ll attempt to unpack this buzzword topic\, distilling what I’ve learnt from a frankly ridiculous number of self-help books\, to figure out what imposter “syndrome” really is\, why so many academics are struggling with it\, and what\, if anything\, we can do about it.\n\nThere is no fee for the workshops\, but those interested in participating should complete a meeting registration form. A workshop Q&A session is tentatively scheduled during the virtual meeting live sessions. If you have any questions about the workshop\, please contact the GSA. \nRegional Gatherings\n \nThe following Regional Gatherings will be held during the week: \n\nRegional meeting for Europe\, 29 October 2025\, 17:00-18:00 UTC\nRegional meeting for South and Central America\, 29 October 2025\, 18:00-19:00 UTC\nRegional meeting for North America\, 29 October 2025\, 19:00-20:00 UTC\nRegional meeting for Asia and Oceania\, 30 October 2025\, 08:00-09:00 UTC\nRegional meeting for Africa\, 30 October 2025\, 09:00-10:00 UTC\n\nRegion Gatherings are free but require registration. For more information\, contact Ali Ger or Rafa Marce. \nNetwork Partnership Program\nThe Committee on inClusive Collaboration (CCC) has revamped the Network Partnership Program (NPP) for virtual meetings. If you are New-to-GLEON and would like to have a mentor during the meeting or are an experienced GLEON member willing to help welcome a newcomer\, you can sign up during meeting registration. \nPurpose\nThe purpose of the Network Partnership (NPP) is to help New-to-GLEON participants engage in effective\, friendly networking and integration into the community of people and collaboration. \nNPP Roles\n\nNew-to-GLEON Partner (NP): If you are new to GLEON (first or second meeting)\, you have the option to choose to sign up as a NP;\nGLEON Partner (GP): If this is your 3rd time or more attending a GLEON All Hands’ Meeting. You can be a faculty member\, scientist\, technician or student that has been to more than two GLEON events and are willing to participate in NPP in a mentoring role.\n\nSuggested Activities and Expectations of Both Roles\nThe exact terms of the networking partnership will vary depending on the particular needs of your partner. Here are a few suggestions that NPP partners from the past GLEON meetings have honored and worked well: \n\nThe GLEON Partner (GP) is expected to be friendly and supportive\, to make frequent contact with the New-to-GLEON Partner (NP)\, introduce him/her to other GLEONites\, help identify similar or complementary research interests among GLEON meeting attendees and general membership.\nThe GP should reach out via email in advance of the meeting and visit the NP’s poster during the Poster Session and helps facilitate interactions with the audience\, if need be.\nNP and GP share at least one break together during the meeting.\n\n\n\n\nPosters and Abstracts\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPoster Session\nBook of Abstracts and Poster Session List\nThe Book of Abstracts includes information about poster locations in the GatherTown meeting space. A list of poster presentation locations is also available. Links to these documents will be activated before the meeting: \n\nGLEON 2025v Book of Abstracts\nGLEON 2025v Poster List and Locations\n\nInstructions for Abstract Submission\nIf you are a student applying for GLEON 2025 Registration support\, a poster abstract is required. For all others applying for support\, participation in the poster session is encouraged. If you are co-authoring a poster with another student\, one submission is sufficient (no need to duplicate submissions). \nAbstracts are also required for any attendee that would like to present a poster\, including for New Sites\, Site Updates\, Research Updates and other Cool Things. \nOrganizers will provide instructions for uploading posters and other media files to a shared folder and how to interact with attendees via the GatherTown platform after you have completed registration. SUMMARY:Limnoseries Lecture November 2025
DESCRIPTION:The next GLEON GSA Limnoseries will take place on November 27 at 15:00 CET / 14:00 UTC (1 hour duration). \nDrivers and impacts of long-term change in the birthplace of Limnology\nPresented by Bastiaan Ibelings\nIn the 19th century Alphonse Forel wrote a book with the title Le Léman (Lake Geneva). A book full of observations on this large and deep lake that are still at the basis of what we do today. In his monograph Forel writes something along the lines: I propose to call this study of lakes Limnology\, the Oceanography of Lakes. Limnology was born. In this lecture I will honour the legacy of Forel and discuss long-term change in the lake\, drivers of change over at least the last 60 years. We will cover the impact of eutrophication followed by re-oligotrophication\, resulting in the present-day question of Have we made the lake too clean? Or do blooms of toxic cyanobacteria still pose a risk\, that would call for further reductions in phosphorus? We will discuss how re-oligotrophication interacts with the effects of climate change – mainly a lack of full winter overturn causing hypoxia\, even in an oligotrophic lake. We will not forget to discuss a third major impact on the functioning and services of Lake Geneva\, the massive invasion of the quagga mussel. \nIf you would like to attend this lecture or receive the recording\, please fill in the following registration form (closed). \nPlease sign up for this lecture by November 20. The Zoom link required for the lecture will be sent to those who have registered. \nWe hope to see you there! \nGLEON Student Association (GSA) workshop sub-committee \n

SUMMARY:Limnoseries Lecture March 2026
DESCRIPTION:The next GLEON GSA Limnoseries will take place on March 11 at 15:00 UTC / 16:00 CET (30min duration): \nThe Power of Visual Storytelling for Scientific Communication\nPresented by Giovan Peyrotty\nMaking complex scientific topics accessible to diverse audiences remains a central challenge. Since human understanding is strongly shaped by emotions\, communication strategies that foster curiosity and empathy tend to have greater impact. Visual storytelling through audiovisual media helps transform abstract knowledge into meaningful human narratives. This presentation explores how adapted visual formats can engage different publics while maintaining scientific rigor. \nIf you would like to attend this lecture or receive the recording\, please fill in the following registration form (registration closed). \nPlease sign up for this lecture by March 6. The Zoom link required for the lecture will be sent to those who have registered. \nWe hope to see you there! \nGLEON Student Association (GSA) workshop sub-committee

SUMMARY:Limnoseries Lecture April 2026
DESCRIPTION:The next GLEON GSA Limnoseries will take place on April 13 at 15:00 UTC (50min duration): \nWhen Science Becomes a Skillset: Building a Career from Ecology\, Theory\, and Data\nPresented by Diego Pujoni\nWhat may happen when a scientist steps outside academia and begins working with private companies? In this talk I intend to show how scientific training has become a powerful toolkit for solving problems. Skills such as design of experiments\, inference\, interpretation\, and communication are essential in any field. In addition\, everywhere\, we will have to deal with shorter deadlines\, different expectations\, and the constant need to balance ethics with real-world constraints without compromising rigor. Ultimately\, the talk argues that thinking like a scientist is a competitive advantage wherever decisions depend on evidence. I hope to share nice tips to help young scientists shape their own career\, expanding opportunities beyond a single track. \nIf you would like to attend this lecture or receive the recording\, please fill in the registration form. \nPlease sign up for this lecture by April 10. The Zoom link required for the lecture will be sent to those who have registered. \nWe hope to see you there! \nGLEON Student Association (GSA) workshop sub-committee
