Variability of Chl fluorescence (COMPLETED)

The automated, high-resolution measurement of chlorophyll a fluorescence is rapidly gaining popularity as a tool for the research and monitoring of aquatic ecosystems. However, despite the increasing application of this technique, relatively little is known of how these measurements scale in space and time or how this variation is apportioned across these scales. We employ a large dataset of chlorophyll fluorescence measurements from 18 lakes around the globe to 1) quantify how variation is apportioned at hourly, daily and monthly scales within lakes, 2) test whether variables previously shown to influence algal dynamics also explain between variation in high-resolution chlorophyll fluorescence measurements, both in terms of the general lakes attributes as well as high resolution physical variables measured concurrently with fluorescence.
