Training Opportunities
GLEON offers a number of training opportunities for students and scientists at any career stage:
- Workshops organized by the GLEON Student Association (GSA) and others are available during the GLEON All Hands’ Meetings. Browse the meeting webpages to see topics and details for past and upcoming meetings.
- In 2021, the GSA Workshop Subcommittee established the Limnoseries: Workshops & Lectures to run every other month in an online format. Check the Events page for upcoming or visit GLEON’s YouTube channel for recordings of past sessions.
- The GLEON Fellowship Program trains cohorts of graduate students to exploit the rich information content of large and diverse data sets, operate effectively in diverse international teams, and communicate outcomes to a broad range of audiences. See below for more information.
Fellowship Program
GLEON established a Graduate Student Fellowship Program in 2012, with initial support from the National Science Foundation. The most recent cohort is participating in Lake Expedition 2022 with support from NASA.
GLEON Fellowship Program (2012-2016)
The GLEON Fellowship Program successfully trained two cohorts of graduate students from 2012 to 2016 and organized other training programs. Students in the early- to mid-stages of doctoral research in both academic and professional environmental science, ecology, and engineering career tracks began the program with an international, collaborative student cohort, and finished the program as integrated members of a grassroots scientific network.
The fellowship program was centered on:
- Development of technical, conceptual and analytical skills critical to carrying out macroscale biology and network science
- Development of communication skills for collaboration, education and public outreach
- Active participation in existing networks of people, data, and technologies
- Training and guidance by experts in how to build and sustain human networks through pedagogy, organizational structure, and leadership training
The GLEON Fellowship Program (2012-2016) provided full funding and logistical support to bring two cohorts (~ 12 students each) together for in-depth training in network science. Over the course of 1.5 years, fellows:
- Traveled to three weeklong workshops for in-depth training, supplemented by online activities and network-level interactions at GLEON all-hands meetings;
- Developed technical, conceptual and analytical skills critical to carrying out macroscale biology and network science;
- Gained access to existing networks of people, data, technologies, students, and technical experts; and
- Completed an interdisciplinary, collaborative scientific project.
Other Fellowship Training Programs
As funding is available, the GLEON Fellowship Program offers training programs for graduate students. Examples include:
- December 2017 Workshop – Bayesian Statistics
- Lake Expedition 2020
- Lake Expedition 2022
