Dear GLEON colleagues,

We would like to inform you that the next GLEON GSA Limnoseries will take place on July 10th at 15:00 UTC (60min duration):

A Lightweight Model for Understanding Climate Change Impacts on Deepwater Oxygen in Stratified Lakes

Presented by Mahtab Yaghouti

Dissolved oxygen is a fundamental indicator of lake ecosystem health and has declined globally under climate change, particularly in deep waters during stratified periods when bottom layers are isolated from surface oxygen sources. In this limnoseries seminar, Mahtab presents a lightweight deepwater oxygen model developed to simulate summer stratification dynamics in the well-studied European lake, Lake Erken. The model provides a computationally efficient framework to investigate how future climate projections may intensify oxygen loss and how atmospheric warming, wind stilling and solar brightening have contributed to historical deoxygenation. Results identify stratification duration as the primary driver of deepwater oxygen decline and indicate an increasing risk of compound extremes, where lake heatwaves coincide with hypoxic conditions (DO< 2 mg/L). Despite its simplicity, the model enables robust quantification of climate impacts and supports assessment of adaptive management strategies through projected changes in oxygen depletion rates.

Registration is now closed. Click here for a recording of the lecture.

We hope to see you there!
