The next GLEON GSA Limnoseries will take place on November 27 at 15:00 CET / 14:00 UTC (1 hour duration).

Drivers and impacts of long-term change in the birthplace of Limnology

Presented by Bastiaan Ibelings

In the 19th century Alphonse Forel wrote a book with the title Le Léman (Lake Geneva). A book full of observations on this large and deep lake that are still at the basis of what we do today. In his monograph Forel writes something along the lines: I propose to call this study of lakes Limnology, the Oceanography of Lakes. Limnology was born. In this lecture I will honour the legacy of Forel and discuss long-term change in the lake, drivers of change over at least the last 60 years. We will cover the impact of eutrophication followed by re-oligotrophication, resulting in the present-day question of Have we made the lake too clean? Or do blooms of toxic cyanobacteria still pose a risk, that would call for further reductions in phosphorus? We will discuss how re-oligotrophication interacts with the effects of climate change – mainly a lack of full winter overturn causing hypoxia, even in an oligotrophic lake. We will not forget to discuss a third major impact on the functioning and services of Lake Geneva, the massive invasion of the quagga mussel.
